Concept: Just 2,300 bottles of the Royal Tokaji Essencia elixir are being made available to selected customers in international markets. Each bottle is presented in a silk-lined wooden box which also contains a hand-blown crystal spoon with which to ration the liquid. In its twenty-one year history, Royal Tokaji has only offered a few bottles of Essencia four times. It calls for perfect conditions for botrytis, the noble rot, to shrivel Tokay grapes into brown raisins, deprived of 90% of their juice. Heaped together in collecting bins, for seven years they slowly leak their juice into a fat glass demijohn. By this time, the liquid has achieved barely two degrees of alcohol; however sugars, acids and the flavour compounds of the grapes gradually transmute into a unique, unctuous syrup. Essencia has very low alcohol content (2.23%) so the legal definition of ‘wine’ does not apply; instead it is known as an ‘elixir.’
